Riceville Tailgate Market operates seasonally from
mid-May to mid-September, Saturday mornings from 9:00
a.m. - Noon. Please check our Web Site (below) for more
precise information as those dates approach.
The
Market is located behind the Riceville Fire Department
and Community Center at 2251 Riceville Rd., Asheville,
NC.
Directions
from Swannanoa/Black Mountain:
Take Rte. 70W to Warren Wilson Rd. Turn left on
Riceville Rd. Go about 2.4 miles to the Riceville Fire
Department.
Directions
from Asheville:
Take Rte. 240 to Rte. 70E to Riceville Rd. Turn left
and go about 3.3 miles to the Riceville Fire
Department.

THE SWISS CHESTNUT ROASTER!

roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost nipping at your

street-vendor fashion!
Outside of Greenlife at 70 Merrimon Ave. near Downtown
Asheville from October
through the New Year!
There is nothing more wonderful than the smell of
chestnuts roasting over an
open fire! Especially around this time of year when
it's cold outside, a nice hot
bag of chestnuts is the perfect thing to warm up your
hands and soul!
Sakshi is the Chestnut Roaster of Asheville. He is much
loved and known for
his good-natured sense of humor. He has been doing
this for a long time...over
20 years. Before moving to Asheville in 1998, Sakshi
had his stand at the train
station in the Swiss village of Laufen.
Just walk by his stand outside of Greenlife
Grocery...the aroma transports people
to many different places: the streets of Paris, the
cozy feeling of being at their
grandparent’s house at Christmas back in 1945...that
time in NYC in 1953.
Interestingly enough, chestnuts are not nuts!
They are low in fat, have an avid
following, and are even good for you.
While Sakshi imports his chestnuts from Italy, people
of this area know all about
them...Even why they used to even pay their taxes with
chestnuts before the blight
came and all the American chestnut trees died.
One thing not many people know is that there are over
300 species of Chestnut
trees...and wherever there's a winter, good old Mother
Nature provides this
complete source of protein to all!
