...not to mention some of the area's best knotters, quilters, and wood turners. SRA will have a table at the Christmas Market. Be sure and stop by.

Item 6:
Buncombe County Greenways Commission

The Buncombe County Board of Commissioners and Buncombe County parks, Greenways, and Recreation Services Advisory Board has formed its first Buncombe County Greenways Commission. The Commission is seeking input from the public. To do so they have a survey available on the Buncombe County website. I took it (this is Joyce the webmaster), and it was fun and short. I encourage you all to click here and contribute your thoughts. (Posted 11/20/08)

In an effort to encourage citizens to use reusable shopping bags. starting July 1st, Buncombe County will be giving out one free reusable shopping bag per person at each County branch library. (While supplies last.) Additional bags can be purchased for $1 each.

Every year the average citizen goes through 6 plastic bags per week or 312 per year. that may not sound like much, but when multiplied by the number of Buncombe County citizens that's a potential of
1,260,000 bags per week. the cost of disposing of these bags in the landfill is about 17 cents each, and as you can imagine, that cost adds up. By using just one reusable bag for a year, the average household would save the disposal of 20 pounds of garbage in our landfill. If you multiply that by the number of households in the County, the potential savings is 6000,000 of trash a year.

The cost of recycling plastic bags so outweighs their value that most recycling facilities will not take them - leading to more and more being thrown into the landfill. Thanks to their light weight, plastic bags are the debris most likely to fly away from land fills and garbage trucks, settling in trees, storm drains, and road sides.

Jerry Mears, Buncombe County Solid Waste Manager, says that the bags are a nuisance and increase the amount of litter around the County every day. He encourages all citizens to take their own shopping bags to stores and cut down on the number of plastic bags in use.

All citizens are encouraged to get their free green bag at their branch library while supplies last. They can be purchase additional green bags at the library for $1 each.

-----Original Message-----From: Swannanoa Pride Community Coalition [mailto:spcc2006@bellsouth.net] Sent: Monday, December 31, 2007 2:27 PMTo: Undisclosed-Recipient:;Subject: New Flood Maps/Important Info

To:  Swannanoa Residents, Businesses and Property Owners
From:  The Swannanoa Pride Community Coalition

We're writing to update you on the preliminary flood maps for our area that were released in late September by the State of North Carolina.  There was a public meeting about the maps that some of you attended earlier this month in Black Mountain.  For those who were unable to be there, we wanted to pass along some important information that we learned at the meeting.

  • All property owners at lower elevations should examine the maps to see if and how they're affected.  The floodplain has been re-drawn and your property's designation on the new maps may affect your development rights and insurance needs.  The floodmaps are available for viewing online at www.ncfloodmaps.com.  Additional information about the mapping process and its affect on property owners is available on this website.
  • You have the right to file an appeal and/or protest of the flood maps, but only within a designated 90 day period.  The 90 day appeals period began on December 6 and ends on March 4.   Information about how to file an appeal/protest, as well as the necessary forms, can be found at www.ncfloodmaps.com.
  • If you have questions about the maps or the appeal process, please contact Cynthia Barcklow at the Buncome County Planning Department.  You can e-mail her at cynthia.barcklow@buncombecounty.org  or call her at 250-4836.  If you're unable to reach Cynthia, please call the main Planning Department number, 250-4830.
  • The Swannanoa Pride Community Coalition will sponsor a public meeting on Tuesday evening, January 15 to help educate our community about the impact of the flood maps on individual property owners and the Swannanoa Valley as a whole.  Representatives from the County and State will be on hand to describe the flood mapping process and answer your questions.  The meeting will begin at 7:00 pm at the Bee Tree Fire Station in Swannanoa, 510 Bee Tree Road.  We hope you'll be able to attend.
